FBR Income Tax Return 2026: How to File Online, Check Filer Status & Avoid Late Filing Problems in Pakistanbold text

Filing an income tax return can seem complicated, especially if you are doing it for the first time. However, Pakistan's Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) now provides online services that allow taxpayers to register, file their return, check their filer status, and make tax-related payments digitally.

For Tax Year 2026, this is an important time for salaried individuals, business owners, freelancers, professionals, shopkeepers and other taxpayers to review their tax position and complete their return on time.

According to the FBR's published income tax due dates, the standard deadline for an individual or Association of Persons (AOP) is on or before 30 September, while the normal due date for a company is 31 December. Taxpayers should always check the latest FBR notification because the government can announce an extension or other change.

This CityHub92 guide explains how the FBR Income Tax Return 2026 process works, how to use the IRIS portal, how to check your Active Taxpayer List status, and what you should know if you miss the filing deadline.

Important: This article is for general information only. Tax circumstances vary from person to person. For complicated business, property, investment or overseas-income matters, consider consulting a qualified tax professional or checking the latest instructions directly from FBR.

What Is an FBR Income Tax Return?

An income tax return is a declaration submitted to the Federal Board of Revenue containing information about your income, taxes, assets and other required financial details for a particular tax year.

FBR uses its online IRIS portal for electronic income tax return filing. A first-time filer normally needs to register before filing a return. Taxpayers who already have an NTN or registration number but do not have IRIS login credentials can use the available e-enrollment options to obtain access.

Filing a return does not simply mean paying tax. Depending on your situation, some tax may already have been deducted from your salary, bank transactions or other payments. The return brings the relevant information together so your tax position can be declared correctly.

What Is the FBR Tax Return Deadline for 2026?

FBR's official due-date guidance states that individuals and Associations of Persons normally file their income tax return on or before 30 September.

For companies, the general deadline is 31 December, although a company with a special tax year may have a different applicable date.

Therefore, taxpayers preparing a Tax Year 2026 return should avoid waiting until the final day.

When thousands of taxpayers try to access an online system close to a deadline, even a minor problem such as a forgotten password, missing record, incorrect mobile number or unreconciled Wealth Statement can delay submission.

If FBR announces an official extension, follow the revised date published through FBR's official channels rather than relying only on messages circulating on WhatsApp, Facebook or other social media.

Who Should Pay Attention to Income Tax Return Filing?

Income tax filing requirements depend on the Income Tax Ordinance and each person's financial circumstances.

People who may need to pay particular attention to their filing obligations include salaried taxpayers, business owners, professionals, freelancers, partners in businesses, property owners, investors and individuals whose circumstances otherwise require a return.

If you are uncertain whether you are legally required to file, do not rely on a general online article to make that determination. Check the latest FBR rules or speak with an appropriately qualified tax adviser.

Even taxpayers who have previously filed should verify that their current year's return has actually been submitted rather than assuming their previous filer status automatically continues.

What Do You Need Before Filing Your FBR Return?

Preparing your information before opening IRIS can make the filing process much easier.

Depending on your circumstances, useful records can include your CNIC, IRIS login details, salary certificate, information about tax already deducted, bank information, business income and expenses, property details, vehicles, investments, assets, liabilities and other financial records relevant to your return.

FBR states that completing an online income tax return involves the Return of Income and the Wealth Statement, where applicable. FBR also explains that successful submission is reflected when the required forms move from the Draft folder into Completed Task in IRIS.

This final check is important. Simply entering information into IRIS and saving a draft does not mean the return has been filed.

How to File FBR Income Tax Return 2026 Online

The main filing system is FBR's IRIS portal.

Step 1: Register with FBR if You Are a First-Time Filer

If you have never registered for income tax, you may first need to complete taxpayer registration.

FBR states that online registration for an individual requires, among other things, a mobile SIM registered against the person's own CNIC and a personal email address. Business-related applicants may also need additional documentation relating to their bank account and business premises.

Make sure your email address and mobile number remain accessible because they can also be needed for account verification and password recovery.

Step 2: Log In to IRIS

Go to the official FBR IRIS service and sign in using your registration details.

Avoid entering your CNIC, password or financial information into websites that merely look similar to an FBR website.

If you forget your IRIS password, FBR provides a password-reset process. Verification codes can be sent to the registered email address and mobile number.

Step 3: Select the Relevant Income Tax Return

Inside IRIS, locate the return applicable to the relevant tax year and taxpayer category.

Take care to select the correct tax year. Filing information against the wrong period can create unnecessary complications.

Step 4: Enter Your Income Information

Declare the income relevant to your circumstances.

For a salaried individual this may include salary and other applicable income. A business owner may need substantially more information covering income, expenses and other business-related items.

FBR also provides a simplified declaration option for qualifying salaried taxpayers. Its guidance states that Declaration Form 114(I) is available for persons deriving income from salary and other sources where salary represents more than 50% of income.

Step 5: Review Tax Already Deducted

Check withholding-tax information and other tax payments or deductions relevant to your return.

Do not assume every number appearing in a system is automatically correct. Compare available information with your own salary certificates, payment records and other documents.

Step 6: Complete Your Wealth Statement

For taxpayers required to submit a Wealth Statement, this is one of the most important parts of return filing.

Your Wealth Statement may cover assets, liabilities, personal expenses and changes in wealth.

FBR explains that the Wealth Statement must reconcile: the increase or decrease in current-year wealth has to correspond with the relationship between income and expenses. If it does not reconcile, IRIS will not allow successful submission.

This is one of the areas where first-time taxpayers often need additional attention.

Step 7: Review Everything Before Submission

Check names, CNIC information, income figures, assets, bank information, taxes and other declarations.

Small typing mistakes can become difficult to correct later, so review the return carefully before submitting it.

Step 8: Submit and Confirm Completion

After submitting, do not immediately close the browser.

Check the IRIS status of your return.

FBR states that successful submission is confirmed when the relevant Income Tax Return and Wealth Statement move from Draft to Completed Task.

Keep your acknowledgement and relevant records for future reference.

FBR also states that people with taxable income are required to keep income tax return records for six years.

What Is a Filer and What Is the ATL?

The term "filer" is commonly used in Pakistan for a taxpayer whose status appears on FBR's Active Taxpayer List (ATL).

Being registered with FBR and being shown as an active taxpayer are related but not identical concepts. Your current ATL status depends on the applicable filing requirements and the relevant tax return.

FBR's ATL system is updated on a daily basis under rules introduced in 2024, allowing eligible taxpayers to be reflected more quickly than under the older weekly updating system.

The Income Tax ATL available from FBR was shown as updated on 20 September 2026 when this article was prepared.

How to Check FBR Filer Status by CNIC

FBR provides multiple ways to check Active Taxpayer status.

For an individual, the official SMS method is:

Type: ATL 1234567890123

Replace the example number with your own 13-digit CNIC and send the message to 9966.

For an AOP or company, FBR instructs taxpayers to use ATL, followed by the relevant seven-digit NTN, and send it to 9966.

FBR also provides online ATL verification and a downloadable Active Taxpayer List.

For privacy, avoid posting your CNIC publicly or sharing screenshots containing your complete identity information.

What Happens If You Miss the FBR Filing Deadline?

Missing the deadline does not mean you should ignore the return.

FBR's guidance confirms that an income tax return can still be filed after the due date using the online filing process.

However, late filing can have consequences.

FBR's ATL guidance states that a person who files after the due date may be added to the Active Taxpayer List after paying the applicable ATL surcharge.

The currently published surcharge amounts are:

Individual: Rs. 1,000 Association of Persons: Rs. 10,000 Company: Rs. 20,000

These amounts relate specifically to ATL inclusion after late filing and should not be confused with every possible penalty or tax consequence that could arise from non-compliance.

Tax laws can change, and circumstances differ. Always confirm the current amount and applicable rules through FBR before making a payment.

Why Is ATL Filer Status Important in Pakistan?

Filer status can affect the tax treatment of a number of transactions in Pakistan.

Different withholding-tax rates can apply to people depending on their taxpayer status and the particular transaction involved. Rates and rules can also change through Finance Acts and other amendments.

For that reason, avoid relying on an old social-media chart that compares "filer vs non-filer" rates.

If you are planning a significant transaction such as purchasing property, registering or purchasing a vehicle, making certain investments or carrying out a major business transaction, check the current FBR rules for that specific transaction.

What Is Asaan Tajir Return?

Small shopkeepers and traders should also be aware of FBR's efforts to simplify return filing.

In September 2026, FBR's Regional Tax Office Islamabad and its Domain Team held an awareness seminar at the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry focusing on the Asaan Tajir / Small Shopkeepers Return filing process.

According to FBR, officials provided participating small businesses with step-by-step guidance on the simplified return and discussed tax compliance issues with traders.

For small business owners using CityHub92, this is particularly relevant. Business formalisation, tax registration and accurate business information are becoming increasingly connected with Pakistan's digital economy.

Common FBR Return Filing Mistakes to Avoid

Some problems can be reduced simply by preparing carefully.

Make sure you are filing for the correct tax year, use your own valid contact information, check your declared income against supporting records, correctly account for assets and liabilities, reconcile the Wealth Statement, verify tax deductions, and confirm that the return appears under Completed Task rather than Draft.

Do not share your IRIS password or verification codes with unknown people claiming they can "activate" your filer status instantly.

Use the official FBR system and qualified professional assistance when necessary.

Can You File Your Own Tax Return?

Many salaried taxpayers with straightforward financial circumstances may be able to complete their own returns by carefully following FBR instructions.

FBR provides online resources, its Knowledge Base and video tutorials for return filing and Wealth Statements.

However, taxpayers with businesses, multiple properties, capital gains, foreign income, complex investments, partnerships or significant changes in assets may benefit from professional assistance.

The objective should not simply be to submit a form. The information submitted should also be accurate and consistent with your actual financial position.

Final Advice for Tax Year 2026

If you need to file an Income Tax Return for Tax Year 2026, start before the deadline rather than waiting until the final evening.

Prepare your records, confirm that your IRIS account works, review your income and assets carefully, complete the required return and Wealth Statement, and check that the submission appears in Completed Task.

Afterwards, verify your Active Taxpayer status through FBR's official ATL system.

As of the publication of this guide, FBR's standard deadline for individuals and AOPs remains 30 September. Always check FBR's latest official notices in case a deadline extension or procedural change is announced.
